What does "good" screen time look like?

  • 90% of a child’s brain develops by age 5—early learning makes a big difference!
  • Kids who use learning technology the right way do better in reading and math.
  • Good screen time vs. bad screen time: Watching random videos won’t help, but learning with a parent or teacher does!
  • Kindergarten readiness = future success—kids who start strong in school have a better chance of graduating and getting good jobs.

Good screen time helps toddlers learn by using interactive games, educational videos, and parent-guided apps like Khan Academy. Bad screen time is when kids watch random videos or play mindless games without learning or thinking.

Good screen time for toddlers is interactive, educational, and limited in length. Here’s what it looks like:
  • Learning apps like Khan Academy Kids that teach letters, numbers, and problem-solving.
  • Watching educational videos with a parent, asking questions, and talking about what they learned.
  • Playing interactive games that help with thinking, memory, or creativity.
  • Using technology together, like reading digital books or drawing on a tablet.
  • Following time limits, with plenty of breaks for play, movement, and hands-on learning.

Good screen time should teach, engage, and encourage real-world learning!
